Margarite Clarey

I am a writer covering conflict and crises, formerly as a freelance journalist and now with the International Crisis Group.

Based in Bangkok, I've lived and worked in Myanmar, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Switzerland (UN Press Corps in Geneva), Australia and Türkiye with shorter reporting stints in Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Tunisia. I have an MA in International Affairs from the Graduate Institute of Geneva.

Over the past nine years, I’ve had the privilege of being invited into people’s homes to hear their stories during conflict, displacement and disasters— both as a journalist and as a media and advocacy professional with non-governmental organisations.

While my work spans media, advocacy and strategic communications, at its core, it’s about storytelling and analysis in conflict and crisis contexts. This page includes some of the journalistic and institutional communication pieces I’ve authored along the way - as well as a few field journals.

Connecting in Conflict

I am passionate about supporting local media in conflict zones and amplifying the voices of communities on the frontlines— also as a means of engaging warring parties.
